Welcome to Church

The word "church" has been taken many ways throughout the years, but the way it's used in the Bible is simple. A "church" is any group of people that gather together under the name of Jesus. At St. John's, that's how we define our church. We are first and foremost here to bring the message of Jesus to all who need to hear it. Social class, race, dress code; none of that matters. What matters is Jesus. His message is for all people and that's who we want to bring it to. So come in, sit down, and listen. You might be surprised at what you hear.

We are

Christian

Jesus is everything. He is the one who healed the blind, who made the lame to walk, and who has given us his perfection that we might stand before God as blameless. Never before has someone showed such love for the broken, the empty, and the sick. We owe everything to Jesus. We desire to know him better. What it means to be Christian is to trust in the promises of Jesus and to walk in his footsteps. So that's that we do at St. John's. We listen to what the Bible teaches us about Jesus and we learn how to live like him in our own lives. It's not always easy, but it is always good.

"Thomas said to him, 'Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?' Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'"

John 14:5-6

We are

Lutheran

We have an old style of worship, but we like it that way for a reason. Our worship is centered around the Bible. The words we speak, the message we preach, and the Sacraments we take all come straight from the Word of God. The Bible is an old book, but it's more relevant than ever today. So we keep ourselves grounded in its truths as we speak its words throughout the worship service.

"So Jesus said to the twelve, 'Do you want to go away as well?' Simon Peter answered him, 'Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.'"

John 6:67-68

We are

A Family

At St. John's we take care of each other. We are all united under the one message of Jesus' death and resurrection. We are all children of God. When one of us rejoices, we all rejoice. When one of us suffers, we all suffer. So we work hard to lift one another up mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. And this doesn't just mean those who sit next to us in the pews. At St. John's we are committed to helping those who are near to us right in the Clifton community as well as those who are far away across the country and across the sea. We are all brothers and sisters in Christ. We work hard to treat each other that way.

"But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become the children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God."

John 1:12-13
